In today’s gospel, Jesus asks what it means to do the Father’s will. Ian Peoples, SJ, reflects on the simple, but powerful tasks that God asks of us. Based on the readings for Sunday, September 27, 2020.

Love is expressed more in actions than by words.

Hi, I’m Ian Peoples and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

I grew up with two brothers and a sister. That meant that laundry was constantly running in our house. My parents, the saints they are, did almost everything. They put the laundry in, switched it to the drier. They even FOLDED it for us. All they asked of me was to take my clean laundry to my room.

And I always SAID I was going to take it to the room. But oftentimes, I let the laundry sit. I didn’t do this simple task.

The reality is Jesus asks us to do very simple things. He’s done ALL the hard work already. And what does he ask us to do? Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, visit the sick and imprisoned–these are all simple tasks! It doesn’t take any expertise to bring a sandwich and some water to the man who lives on the corner of your street. No expertise is required to visit the sick and imprisoned.

So, ask yourself, what simple thing is God asking you to do today? And remember, don’t leave the laundry pile sitting there! Get to work.
