God spoke to Joseph in dreams. How does God speak to you? Eric Immel, SJ, reflects on dreams and recognizing God’s call in this week’s One-Minute Homily.

Based on the readings for Sunday, December 22, 2019.

It was all a dream, but did I pay attention? I’m Eric Immel, and this is my one-minute reflection.

Today, just before we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we get the story of God’s call to Joseph. We know that Mary is pregnant, and we know that Joseph is supposed to marry her. For Joseph, things aren’t going as planned, and he considers bailing.

But then – boom – the sign – a dream, an angelic message to wed Mary and help raise Jesus. And, Joseph does it.

My dreams are weird – I have dreams about flying, about being a Jedi Knight, about ghosts – are these dreams divine signs? Is God trying to tell me something? My gut says no, but the truth is – maybe.

God comes at us from all sides at all times – who am I to say how God tries to communicate with me? What if Joseph hadn’t been open to his dream? What if his eyes hadn’t been opened by it? Things could be very different.

As we prepare to celebrate God with us, may we dream big and pay attention to the signs God offers us.
