The genealogy of Jesus reveals a long line of sinners and saints. Jesus’ family line reminds us that no matter where we come from, God calls us all to take part in God’s beautiful plans for the world. Based on the readings for Christmas.

You ever think that your family is a little messed up? Well – Jesus’ family was no different.

I’m Fr. Eric Immel, and this is my One-Minute Homily.

The most interesting Christmas reading to me is actually the long pronunciation nightmare that is the genealogy in Chapter 1 of Matthew’s gospel. It’s filled with names like Zerubbabel, kings like David, and fathers like Joseph. A family of note, yes – but also a family of sinners who for generations can’t grasp what God promises them if they just believe.

This is what Jesus is born into – not a polished, perfect extended family, but a family marred from generations of dishonesty, wounds, and wars. Into this imperfect family is born the savior of the world – Emmanuel – God with us.

Regardless of where we’ve come from – God can work with that, and God can do wonderous things. With such a family as Jesus had, God invites us to remember that where we come from marks us, and with those marks, God’s work of salvation continues.
