What are your gifts and how do you use them? Fr. Joe Laramie, SJ, reminds us to be courageous with our gifts so that we can “give light to all.” Based on the readings for Sunday, February 9, 2020.

What good is a match if you don’t light it?

Hi, I’m Fr Joe Laramie, and this is my One-Minute Homily.

The Bible lists a number of spiritual gifts — here are a few: Kindness, knowledge, faith, hope, love, and joy.

Which ones do you have? Which ones do you use the most? Or the least?

Do you ever say, “Oh, I don’t know much about that,” even though you do? Or, “Maybe someone else should do it,” though you’re the perfect man or woman for the job?

Perhaps we do this because we’re humble, or because we’re afraid. Afraid of responsibility? Afraid of being asked to lead. Afraid of answering God’s call.

Jesus calls us to “put our light on a lampstand,” so that other people can see and glorify God. What good is a match if you don’t light it?

Christ calls us to use our gifts to “give light to all in the house.” This house is His House, the Church. He gave us these gifts and calls us to use them to serve others.
