Would you recognize Mary’s voice if she were knocking at your door? Conan Rainwater, SJ, reflects on the importance of drawing close to our Mother Mary in these final days of Advent. Based on the readings for the Fourth Sunday of Advent.

Is that Aunt Mary I hear?

Hi, I’m Conan Rainwater, and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

I heard her before she walked through the door. Even before she arrived, I easily picked out her voice. Each person has a unique voice, just like their fingerprints. While we’re great at recognizing the voices of people we’re familiar with, that doesn’t hold true with people we don’t know well.

We hear that “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb.” Just as we can recognize the voice of our aunt, friend, or favorite singer, John the Baptist recognized the voice of Mary. Thus, he knew her, the Mother of God.

Like John, we’re called to recognize Mary’s voice – to know Mary. It takes time for us to get to know the voice of our beloved.

Christmas is so close–but news flash, we’re still in Advent! We are still waiting for the Savior. In these final days of Advent, let us spend time listening especially to the voice of his mother Mary, who is also our Mother. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
